Eventually I reinstalled An圜onnect and it worked. I ended up completely restoring my machine, running First Aid on my empty HD (which did seem to fix something, though I'm not sure what) and eventually reverting to the original Mojave OS I had before. It became clear that a bigger issue with my Mac was causing both these and An圜onnect to fail. The same then happened with Big Sur, and also even when attempting to run First Aid in Recovery mode.

Just incase anybody is interested in the resolution - I was advised by the IT people to upgrade to Catalina, which I tried, but it caused problems on my machine and the install failed. I can find an older download file to reinstall An圜onnect, but when I do so and launch it, it automatically updates again as soon as I enter my password. I'm at the end of my tether in all honesty. Click 'Continue' to begin the installation process. Once the download is complete, locate and run the An圜onnect 'DMG' file.
